The Sunday Times

Inspiring the next generation

Sportswoman of the Year was founded three decades ago by our client, the Sunday Times, and has inspired a generation of young women to get involved in sport; with past winners including legends like Jessica Ennis-Hill, Victoria Pendleton and Christine Ohuruogu.

Last year was their most ambitious so far 4,500 nominations were whittled down to 9 winners, announced at a star-studded awards ceremony in London that we were delighted to produce.

Reaching an audience of millions

On the night, we welcomed 230 VIP guests to the stylishly branded Hilton Bankside hotel, with photographers lining the red carpet to capture the UK’s sporting superstars. After welcome drinks, it was time for the main event.

While it’s a big evening for the VIP’s in the room, Sportswoman of the Year was also broadcast live on Sky Sports. So our talented team of experts worked hard with the Sky team to ensure the experience was special for both the guests at the venue and the millions of viewers at home.

In particular we paid close attention to lighting, designing a colour palette that brought an elegant yet celebratory atmosphere, while providing optimum conditions for the camera team. Our sweeping set with its long curved ramp showcased the emotional winners as they approached the stage to receive their well-deserved awards.

Winning formula

Months in the planning, the event took 100 crew around 3 days to set up, including all of the cameras and associated broadcast infrastructure. The evening went off without a hitch, and millions of viewers enjoyed watching speed skater Elise Christie win the coveted main award.

In addition to the TV audience, the event reached a further 3.5 million people through social media.
